چکیده

We study a multi-server queueing model of a revenue-maximizing firm providing a service to a market of heterogeneous priceand delay-sensitive customers with private individual preferences. The firm may offer a selection of service classes that are differentiated in prices and delays. Using a deterministic relaxation, which highlights the first-order economic structure of the problem, we construct a solution that is incentive compatible and near-optimal in systems with large capacity and market potential. Our approach provides several new insights for large-scale systems: i) the tractable first-order analysis characterizes essentially all salient features of the optimal solution; ii) service differentiation is optimal when the less delay-sensitive market segment is sufficiently elastic; iii) depending on system capacity and market heterogeneity, “intentional delay” (whereby delay is artificially added) in cheaper service classes may be used to justify price premiums in the more expensive service classes, akin to the role of “damaged goods” in the economics literature; and iv) connecting economic optimization to queueing theory, the revenue-optimized system has the premium class operating in a “quality-driven” regime and the lower-tier service classes operating in an “efficiency-driven” regime (i.e., with noticeable delays that arise either endogenously or due to the injection of intentional delay by the service provider).

Incentive-Compatible Revenue Management in Queueing Systems: Optimal Strategic Delay and other Delaying Tactics

How should a capacity-constrained firm design an incentive-compatible price-scheduling mechanism to maximize revenues from a heterogeneous pool of time-sensitive customers with private information on their willingness to pay, time-sensitivity and processing requirement? We consider this question in the context of a queueing system that serves two customer types. We provide the following insight...

Incentive-Compatible Revenue Management in Queueing Systems: Optimal Strategic Delay

H should a firm design a price/lead-time menu and scheduling policy to maximize revenues from heterogeneous time-sensitive customers with private information about their preferences? We consider this question for a queueing system with two customer types and provide the following results. First, we develop a novel problem formulation and solution method that combines the achievable region appro...

Optimal Pricing for Finite Capacity Queueing Systems with Multiple Customer Classes

We determine optimal static prices for a finite capacity queueing system serving customers from different classes. We prove an upper bound for the optimal arrival rates for a fairly large class of queueing systems and provide sufficient conditions that ensure the existence of a unique optimal arrival rate vector. We show that these conditions hold for M/M/1/m and M/G/s/s systems and prove struc...

Multi-Objective Lead Time Control in Multistage Assembly Systems (TECHNICAL NOTE)

In this paper we develop a multi-objective model to optimally control the lead time of a multistage assembly system. The multistage assembly system is modeled as an open queueing network, whose service stations represent manufacturing or assembly operations. The arrival processes of the individual parts of the product, which should be assembled to each other in assembly stations, are assumed to...

Pricing strategies and service differentiation

This paper analyzes a communication network, used by customers with heterogeneous service requirements. We investigate priority queueing as a way to establish service differentiation. It is assumed that there is an infinite population of customers, who join the network as long as their utility (which is a function of the queueing delay) is larger than the price of the service. We focus on the s...
